Yemen in the aftermath of 9/11

In comical anecdotes, 45 year old American-born Yemeni rapper AJ talks of the lack of local understanding for his music and the cultural alienation he experiences after migrating back to his motherland.

Siraj Mohamed, an Afro-American who found islam after a long spiritual quest, is living in Sana’a to study Arabic. He, too, grapples with cultural alienation, which leads him to hold Arabic vernacular culture responsible for polluting the purity of muslim faith.

Abdul-Ghani el Eryani, a prominent political commentator of the country and member of a local political clan, relates his personal story as the family’s rebel in the light of the recent socio-cultural history of Yemen; it’s political turmoil and the rise of Islamism.
